Hey Hyram! What’s A Good Skin Care Routine?

Moreso than products or brands (initially at least), Hyram always recommends that you cover the fundamentals of a skincare routine. Because if you aren’t fulfilling each one of these steps, then you’re missing out on significant benefits.

Hyram says that the perfect skincare routine has four different steps:

  • Cleanser
  • Treatment
  • Moisturizer
  • Sunscreen

First and foremost, Hyram recommends sunscreen. That is extremely important because you always want to make sure that you’re protecting against the primary source of all skincare problems – which is the sun. 90% of premature aging is due to sun exposure alone.

If you have more dry or oily skin, it is imperative that you find a cleanser that accommodates those needs specifically. Not only for removing the sunscreen but also for removing the dirt that you collect throughout the day. Finding a good moisturizer based on your skin type is equally important.

People often tell Hyram “I hate moisturizer because it feels so greasy on my skin.” So he stresses the importance of finding a good moisturizer that is fast absorbing, extremely lightweight, or more heavy and moisturizing if your skin needs it.

Lastly, Hyram encourages beginners to follow the “keep it simple” mantra. Start with a small and simple skincare routine first. Avoid 10 to 12 steps for skincare as they can be very complicated, overwork your skin, and become very difficult to commit to consistently.

Hey Hyram Yarbro! Sunscreen & Moisturizer Combo: Yay or Nay?

Hyram advises consumers to exercise caution when using sunscreen and moisturizer combos. The main reason is that these two should be used very differently. You should be using sunscreen frequently, whereas your skin may not need constant moisturizer, especially if you have naturally oily skin.

The ingredients in combination products tend to be much richer, heavier, and occlusive.

Hyram concludes by saying “the likelihood that I’m going to use the same amount of a sunscreen moisturizer as I would a standalone sunscreen that’s more lightweight is very low. I think because of that, a lot of people who do use the moisturizer and sunscreen together end up using less of the product overall”

Hey Hyram Yarbro! What Should Us 16-Year Olds Do?

Hyram wants to spread awareness about the danger with products geared toward teen acne. Typically, they include prescription medication and can be incredibly strong. When using these types of products, you should avoid over-treating your skin using both salicylic acid and another powerful chemical cleanser. This combination can be more harmful than helpful.

Hyram is always happy to see products that contain Niacinamide, as it is one of the ingredients on his “yes yes list!” He recommends CeraVe acne cream for teens that have received a limited benefit from salicylic acid cleanser. This product contains Benzoyl peroxide, a good alternative to salicylic acid that is less likely to cause adverse reactions in consumers’ skin.

The discussion is directed towards how to care for oily skin. Hyram recommends that if you’re just using the leave-on salicylic acid treatment just use it on the oily areas; don’t put it on the dry areas because it will dry it out even further.

Hey Hyram Yarbro! What Cringey Things Do Middle-Aged Women Do?!?

In this segment, Hyram discusses the common “the pricer the better” misconception among consumers. Beginning by saying “I’ve seen a lot of people drop hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of dollars in a skincare product”

Hyram believes that when you get into the price range of $300 to $500 to $700 to $1,000, no skincare product can possibly be worth that valuation and you’re essentially throwing your money away. Marketing is an incredible tool, often leading people to believe that if they want the best results, you have to pay for it. Somehow price has become synonymous with the better product, which is untrue. In fact, many of these high-end products contain “Hyram’s No-No ingredients,” along with harmful irritants.

Instead of spending hundreds of dollars, you should spend money on what is scientifically shown to actually have a huge impact on your skin – a good sunscreen! There’s very little data surrounding moisture or the need for a very expensive moisturizer.

The other common mistake is people starting skincare too late. Hyram likes to encourage positive results, but at a certain point, the damage to your skin is already there. It’s a bit unrealistic, for example,  for a 60-year old consumer to expect a product to completely get rid of all their wrinkles overnight.

Bottom line: the earlier you start, the more long-term issues you can prevent.

Hey Hyram Yarbro! Where Are Teenagers Messing Up In Their Skincare Routine?

We asked Hyram about the biggest mistakes teenagers are making today with their skincare routines. Teens are unintentionally damaging their skin by using overly harsh scrubs, overusing exfoliants and chemical exfoliants, along with retinol. These products – specifically retinol – can be highly beneficial, but only when used in moderation. The damage is often compounded by their failure to use adequate amounts of sunscreen.

Hyram came to a point where he had to readjust his messaging, initially telling teens to “stop using these harsh things, use chemical exfoliants! they’re so much better” but soon realized the more important message was…

Sunscreen Sunscreen Sunscreen!

People often mistakenly assume that they only need to use sunscreen if they’re spending hours and hours at the beach. Even if you sit beside a window at work, you are being exposed to harmful UV rays. Sunscreen is an everyday product!

Hey Hyram Yarbro! How Do Folks In Their 40’s Turn Back the Clock?

Hyram, what do you recommend for women around my age who are fighting wrinkles, dark under-eye circles, and that kind of thing?

Hyram advises slightly older consumers to use chemical exfoliants and retinol a few times a week, which he calls a ‘dream combination’ for those seeking significant results within their skin. To minimize fine lines and achieve glowy skin – which is important as you age, because your skin cycle slows down – you must be vigilant with your skincare!

I’d also say sensitive skin is a big thing. Particularly, like where I grew up; I grew up on a cattle ranch – so I’d see guys with significant sun damage and dark spots from being out in the sun all the time.

That isn’t isolated to men alone. It’s everyone; dark spots are a big thing, which is why sunscreen is so important! A lot of more mature women are prone to dark spots as well- perhaps it’s just that the skincare industry hasn’t promoted that message quite as much as the importance of sunscreen.
